A Roundup of What I’ve Been Up To This New Year

For my birthday, I asked my husband to make me a farmhouse headboard. He's still working on it but here it is so far:
I'm so excited! I'm thinking about going with white. Plans from here.

Also for my birthday, my husband surprised me with flowers. Pink is my favorite and my dad used to always get me a carnation so it's extra special.

Next week will mark one year of me keeping track of a strict diet and exercise program. I am finally back to where I was 8 years ago!

I wanted to make sugar cookies during December but never got around to it. We had a huge snow day last Saturday so it was the perfect activity to keep us busy and warm.
Get recipe here.

As part of our Christmas presents, we surprised the kids with a trip to Disneyland. That 70 degree sunny SoCal weather is calling my name. I can't wait to get out of our single digits and we're all super excited to do Disney!

Chalkboard from here.

I hope you are enjoying your 2018 thus far.

The Friday Four Roundup {2}

I can't believe it's Friday already and then we will be heading into the last week of July! Here are a couple things I've been enjoying this week:

1. My husband and I are cracking down on our carb, dairy, and sugar consumption. Every dinner this week has had very little or no carbs. I have already tried several new recipes, including tonight I made these two-ingredient pancakes; just eggs and bananas, they were amazing! I couldn't believe we were eating pancakes with NO flour! The recipe I followed is found {here}.

2. Speaking of food, one of my favorite stores for kitchen supplies, Williams-Sonoma is having 75% of all their clearance plus free shipping. You know what that means? Good deals on their Summer stuff AND everyone's getting ready to bring out the FALL stuff, my favorite! {yay!} I am in desperate need of some new kitchen towels and have been debating about getting a pack of their signature stripe ones, in the summer "clearance" colors, of course. I know they are pretty good quality. Anyone have experience with them?

3. I am enjoying using this little candle I picked up at Target last month. It is a light summer scent, not too strong and very lovely. You can see their entire line of Illume candles {here}.

4. And lastly, we are getting ready to do two days of Pioneer Days out here. Parades, rodeos, races, food, and lots of fun. This will actually be my first time attending here so I am excited to see what's on the schedule!
Have a fabulous weekend!

The Friday Four Roundup {1}

I am staring a new "series" on my blog called The Friday Four Roundup. I'm hoping this will motivate me to at least post 4 of something every week, especially for our loved ones who are so far away and enjoy the updates :) It might be about family life, current happenings, something that caught my eye, whatever. This week I will indulge the grandparents with some kid cuteness!

Our sweet baby turned one a little bit ago.

My patient mother in law taught me how to cut hair.

The kids are enjoying summer time!

The baby decided to start walking (and climbing. and getting into everything...) around 13 months.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! We are currently enjoying a summer thunder storm and hopefully some cooler temperatures.

A Happy Mother's Day, What I Read, and What I'm Reading Next

There are two things I really, really like to have for Mother's Day: Breakfast in Bed....

.... and a Book. A book to sit and read all day with no interruptions, no guilt, and nothing else to do. It's awesome :) This year, I chose to read "Hatchet," a Newberry honor book by Gary Paulsen for young readers. My husband suggested it, as it was "the book that changed his life" in 5th grade.
The official summary is "After a plane crash, thirteen-year-old Brian spends fifty-four days in the wilderness, learning to survive initially with only the aid of a hatchet given by his mother, and learning also to survive his parents' divorce."
I really liked this book. It is an easy read, I read it all today. It is adventurous, suspenseful, and enlightening. You feel like you are there, with him in the wilderness. It's awesome to see him learn to survive and live off the land and it's actually a little unbelievably sad when it comes to an end and you think of how outside of living in the wild, how easily all these crucial things come to us: fire, food, shelter, that we all take so much for granted.

My next book is "Spirit Animals" by Brandon Mull. I haven't read any of his books but heard they were good. This one was recommended to me by my third-grader, who reads at about a 2 grades higher level :) I have already read the first 2 chapters and am intrigued.

I hope you had a Happy Mother's Day!

Happy October! {Chalkboard Art}

I feel just like Anne Shirley. I LOVE this time of year. Isn't it wonderful? I love when the sun still shines yet there is a coolness and crispness to the air. It reminds me of beautiful Saturday mornings growing up with my family raking leaves, going to my dad's hobby shows or my moms homemade mulled apple cider, Apple Hill or General Conference. Ahhhh, life is good.

Oceanside Therapy and Pottery Barn Decorative Accents

If you haven't noticed, Rebecca's Roundup is on a little vacation. I thoroughly enjoyed this afternoon at the beach. It was everything it should be. The sun on my face, breathing in deeply the fresh ocean air, and spending time with my kids and watching them experience it themselves.
In true RR fashion, I even collected a bag of sand and driftwood to add to my summer season decor so I didnt have to buy it from Pottery barn for $15-$23. And now too, I'll always have a little reminder of this fun beach day.

New lovely pillows for the sofa in Waverly's Lattice Lagoon. {LOVE} Trying to incorporate more CoLoR and I am loving this! Especially for summer. Really feeling a need for some sand and starfish to go with it!

Happy Bday to a wonderful Mother in Law and thanks so much to wonderful sis in law for the most yummy quiche brunch I've ever had and fun times shopping at H&M and Pottery Barn for much needed retail therapy!

And happy, happy birthday to Big Grandpa and thanks to my awesome in-laws for always willing to get the party started!!!

Happy 9th Anniversary!

This morning I was sweetly suprised by this little "love note" from my honey. He changed my "spring" blocks into this:

Don't hate me.

SO sorry for the lack of posts! We had tons of trouble with our internet service. They disconnected it, after too many 40 minute phone calls and wastes of time we just gave up and cancelled it, etc, etc. If you ever have a choice between AT&T and something else, get the SOMETHING ELSE! So still waiting to see if we can even find any service through another provider. (We moved to a SMALL town, people).
Hope you are all doing great and I am personally enjoying the kiddo being back in school and fall right around the very next corner. Our new town has seasons! SEASONS! At least more than where I lived before!
Happy September~

One of the best gifts.

Not too long ago, a precious person to me gave me an unexpected gift.

I've always dabbled here and there in the arts. I took an art class in high school which I loved, and did a few watercolors. After high school, I've always wanted to take a watercolor class, but it just never was a "priority." I still mention it to my husband from time to time when the community college mails out its brochure every fall.
And then I was given this very thoughtful gift and I am more excited than ever. I even got a mini "class" with my new set:

I know I am not very good. And I'm even embarrassed to show you, but here is a little watercolor I completed using several techniques from the mini class.
I know I have a lot to learn! But more importantly, is the excitement this has instilled within me and a desire to reach beyond myself as I am now and continue to learn and educate myself. What a fantastic gift.

Please forgive the following personal thoughts.
I've been feeling kind of badly lately, thinking about what I "do", etc , etc.
Thinking about my new watercolor set and my desires, brought me to find a wonderful article. And now I feel a little better. But even more, it has contributed to a better understanding of my purpose and direction. And I feel so blessed to be able to "become."

The meaning of education is often assumed to be somehow related to “going to school” or learning as an external experience, related only to acquiring knowledge or skills helpful toward work productivity in society.

Considered in its broadest sense, education may occur at school, at home, with family, at church, or even with an enlightening thought in a moment of solitude. Education is more than learning. It is a complex interactive teaching and learning process.

Perhaps this is not “education” as it is traditionally defined. What we are calling “education,” one may call enrichment, fulfillment, vision, teaching, learning, or a number of other words. Indeed, education encompasses all of these.

Obviously, this view of education is idealistic. But let us not be afraid to dream of the ideal, for “as [we] dream, so shall [we] become. [Our] vision is the promise of what [we] shall one day be; [our] ideal is the prophecy of what [we] shall at last unveil.” 1 The educated woman is within each one of us, awaiting discovery. Thus, education is a beautiful, progressive process of “becoming.”

However a woman chooses to involve herself, it is the dynamic process of “becoming” in education that is desirable; and excellence in that education is the loftiest goal. There are a few precious people in the lives of each of us who refuse to accept less than the best of themselves, their peers, their students, or their children; not in a demanding, oppressive way, but in a stimulating, exciting manner that makes each of us want to reach a bit higher in all our worthy pursuits toward excellence.

-from The Educated Woman Within Us by Elaine Shaw Sorensen

Thank you for my gift, and for refusing to accept less than the best in a stimulating exciting manner that makes me want to reach a bit higher in all my worthy pursuits toward excellence.

In my own little corner in my own little world...Christmas

My bedside table decked out for Christmas. Just a little something pretty to look at that makes me smile:)
