Decorator's Trick: Hall Mirror {Quick Fix and No Cost!}

I learned a new trick recently just from browsing pretty pictures of small spaces on Apartment Therapy. I noticed several homes had mirrors at the end of a hall. Why had I never thought of this? What an easy way to make a very small space feel bigger. I use mirrors all the time, I especially love to put them across from a window to "double" the open feeling or on the sides of windows to "expand" them, but the thought had never occurred to me to put them at the end of a hall.

Here, you will observe picture A:
this is probably the hardest working area of the home. This hall holds the doorways to the kids rooms, hooks for their backpacks and coats, the kids bathroom which also becomes the guest bathroom when we have guests, the laundry and utility closet, and this hall begins just beyond the kitchen- the fridge, more specifically, the other hardest working space in our home.

That's A LOT of functions for one tiny space. Often it feels cramped and the second I have to open a laundry door and haul over some laundry baskets, I start to feel clausterphobic. YUCK. Enter my new hall mirror knowledge....

By simply moving some picture frames around and "shopping" my living room for a mirror, this space now feels SO much bigger.

Ahhhhh. I can breathe a little easier now. So. Much. Better.

Have you learned any new decorating tricks lately? Have a great week!

Pinwheel Wreath {No. 2} and Wreath Hanging Tip

I decided to update the wreath on the girls door and had been wanting to make the adorable Pinwheel Wreath my sister in law Karen posted here. I followed her tutorial and was very pleased with the result. I am just loving pinwheels! I would love one for Fourth of July in red white and blues - it is so Summery to me. This wreath really compliments the Children on Parade fabric I used in the girls room and the overall look and feel of their room (which you can see here.)
TIP: To hang the wreath, I just cut a ribbon and hot glued it to the back of the wreath, then I hot glued the other end to the top of the door! No one ever sees the top of a door, right? So why not?! Try it!

Make Your Own Custom Curtain Rod For Very Little Money

Now that I've shown you my living room, I will share how I made the custom curtain rod over the large front window.
For this project, I basically just followed the directions I found HERE, with the help of my handy hubby.
To make this, you will need:
  • 1/2" electrical metal tubing conduit
  • 2 or 3 L brackets depending on the length if you need one in the middle or not
  • 1/2" conduit straps for each bracket
  • nuts and bolts for each bracket
  • finials
  • spray paint
  • tools
I purchased all these things at Ace Hardware, except for the finials which were a lucky hand me down from my awesome S-I-L. Thanks sis :) If you need any help, just ask the store employees, they will know what you are talking about even if you don't! They can also cut the tubing for you so make sure you measure before hand. It just so happened that the length it came in was perfect for our big front window so no cutting was necessary for this one.
First I sanded the tubing. This takes just a minute to quickly go over then wipe down.

We then hung the tubing with string from a clothesline in the backyard so I could easily spray paint it. For this step, use whatever genius idea you can come up with to spray it!

I also stuck my finials in a cardboard box and sprayed them as well. Do the same with all the brackets, nuts and bolts, etc.

Then attach the straps to the brackets and measure, mark, and screw in the brackets to the wall.

I then had to put the curtains on the rod first because they wouldn't fit over the finials. Then I hot glued the finials into the rod.

Then hang it up, step back, and enjoy your terrific handiwork!
We LOVE how this turned out and it was so easy and cost less than $10 for a huge custom curtain rod.

Quick Fix Tip: {shaving pills off a rug}

Have you ever had a sweater that after wearing got pills all over it? You know, those tiny knots of textile that wad up all over and make something look worn out and ten years old? Well did you know that you can solve that problem by simply shaving them off with a razor?
I got a new rug from Target last summer. It's supposed to be one of those "squishy soft under your feet" types. Problem is, you can't throw the thing in the wash like a normal rug. On top of that, to my dismay, shortly after using it, it started developing huge pills. I love Target but I am sorry to say I do not love this rug. Consumer rating's going way down in my book!
Well, today I had had enough and decided to use the ol' shave the pills off trick. It worked perfectly!
Whenever using this trick, whether with a sweater, a rug, or whatever else you may find, make sure your victim lays flat and shave in one direction only.
After it was clean shaven (!), all the lovely dirt marks were quite clear. I spot cleaned with an old rag and water, and it's almost like my rug is good as new! (oh wait, it IS still sort of new. Darn thing's less than 6 months old. Oh well, now I know. Stick with the ones you can throw in the wash and don't pill!)
But as always, it's very satisfying to fix a problem quickly, easily, and without spending a penny.
Have you ever found anything needing a "clean shave" around your house?

I LOVE: a few good deals on fashion and beauty

Deal #1: How to get department store items for {practically} free. Do you ever get a Kohl's, JC Penny's, or other card/coupon in the mail for $10 off any purchase? If so, USE THEM! Go to the store with the goal in mind that your budget is $10! It may sound impossible, but you'd be surprised. It's like a treasure hunt of sorts. Know that you'll basically be going for small sale items or clearance racks only. Be creative and keep an open mind. Sometimes you'll walk away with 2 or 3 fun small items like a wooden letter, 4 oz. candle, and a canister of vinyl wall lettering (I once did at Kohl's!) Other times, you might not find anything fun, but get something that otherwise you need and it's more fun getting for free than spending money on (like a trash can, or kid's socks like I also did at Kohl's). My go-to fun item if you can't find anything else, is the clearance jewelry. Lots of fun stuff there.
Last week I got a JC Penny $10 off any $10 minimum purchase. TIP: at JC Penny you have to spend at least $10 before tax so I try to find something a little over $10. I got lucky and found a shirt in the JR's clearance section.
60 % off $26.oo for $10.40. Perfect.
After the coupon, I walked away after paying forty three cents! Woo-hoo!
Deal #2: drug-store/inexpensive brand cosmetics. Some cheap makeup is a good deal. Some of it isn't. I am a MAC fan, and after using the good stuff, you see the difference.
I have been wearing eyeliner every day probably since the age of 15 or 16. Just last year I was given a MAC cream eyeliner they call Fluidline. It is SO. great. It goes on easy and stays on all day. I am convinced it might just be the best.
While at Target recently, I saw that the e.l.f. brand (which stands for eyes lips face if you didn't know) has a new cream liner. So for $3, I thought I'd try it. And I was pleasantly surprised! It goes on good, it is softer than MAC so spreads a little thin sometimes so I have to apply thicker but overall, it does a pretty good job, especially for three bucks.
If you'd like to try it, I suggest ditching the brush it comes with, and with your 40% off coupon at Michael's or JoAnn, go to the painting section and buy a Loew-Cornell 797F-1 brush. It is a thin, flat, straight cut brush that does the trick beautifully and easily. TIP: a great way to apply makeup without having to spend a fortune on cosmetic brushes is to use paint brushes. Many are made with natural fibers and are good quality and much cheaper. There are tutorials and more information on websites like Classy Cosmetics (see my blog list) or on youtube.

Don't judge me. I decided to bite the bullet and post these self pics despite my premature wrinkles, dark under eye circles and sun damage. Yikes!

Deal #3: Great cheap jewelry {if you can't get it for free with a $10 off coupon!}. Have you heard of Forever21? It is a super trendy store at relatively cheap prices and {can} be lots of fun. However, be warned: if you are a mom like me, it can be absolutely horrifying going into that store. lol! I suggest going on a weekday morning when most of the youth {should} be in school and not with all your kids. And I'm really just talking about the accessories, here. They have stylish, fun jewelry and a very good variety, for cheap. One of my favorite necklaces came from their dollar section. That's right. Sometimes they have great stuff for ONE DOLLAR each.
I have been looking for something special to wear for a certain important occasion coming up. I was bummed to see they didnt have a dollar section right now. However, I found this fancy schmancy for a total including tax of three dollars and three cents. Not bad. And wow, does it make a statement! TIP: if you are shy about statement jewelry, there are lots that have faux diamonds or pearls, or gold or silver, or clear crystals or beads, that are neutral and can go with lots of things and will serve you for years to come. Or if not, you dont have to stress about it, 'cause you got it for a GOOD DEAL!

What good deals have you gotten lately?

I love a good quote...

furniture collections from www.bakerfurniture.com

Browsing through my September 2010 Architectural Digest Magazine the other day, I was inspired by this advertisment by Baker Furniture:
"The art of things chosen well rather than often."
Amen. Some of these bloggers spend so much time filling up their houses with STUFF and doing projects just to spend money and busy themselves. That's not what good design is all about! Step back and take a look at the big picture and stop worrying about filling your space with more stuff and "creativity." Just create a nice home with things that are tasteful and have real meaning to you. Sometimes it takes years to achieve what you have always wanted, and often it is done in layers. Another favorite design quote of mine, and in a way a design principle for me is:
"Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."~William Morris

HALLOWEEN CANDY: LOVE/HATE

What to do with the leftovers?

Here are a few ideas I have gathered:

#1: Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simply
chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream.

#2: Bite size bars or chunks of chocolate from broken up bars and candies can be placed in the middle of poured cupcake batter. Bake as directed and when you bite into them, there is a delicious melted chocolately suprise!

#3: Make a "candy counter" ~ one piece of candy per child counting the days to Thanksgiving or Christmas. Hang on wall, ties with ribbons, etc...

#4: The best idea for mommy's hips, although may be devastating to children: Throw it away. Ahhh!

Do you have any other ideas???

FREE MONEY

Did you know that if you go to any checkout at Kohl's and fill out your email address, you will be emailed a coupon for $10 off any purchase? Yeah! That's like free money, people. I bought a shirt on clearance and they ended up giving ME 80 cents. SWEET.

Polly-Vous Francais? -OUI!!!

*SQUEAL!* After an entire month of searching everywhere for THIS absolutely adorable fabric, "Polly Goes to Paris" that I just HAD to have (for my daughters, of course) I FOUND IT!!!!! I am so excited. I cannot WAIT to actually see it in person. I have so many ideas of what to do with it swirling around in my head.
I decided to save the pink for their room and went ahead and bought this blue and brown for a skirt or dress. I love making my daughters little clothes. And they will just LOVE this. We adore Fancy Nancy at my house and they go around saying "Ooh, la, la!" SO CUTE! Now all I have to do is sit back and wait patiently for the mailman to bring it to me..................................

I LOVE GARAGE SALES

Today on the way home from the gym I saw a few garage sale signs..............I had to check them out. Just to SEE....... I only had about 5 bucks in my wallet, but I thought I'd see if there was anything good..................
I got a really pretty robe (not pictured) a nice black cardigan with flowers, a classic white cotton Old Navy top that I think is new, a cute teal colored top with pretty sequin things around the neckline, a little ceramic bunny to replace the one my husband broke last Easter as he was putting the decorations away....................
And the COUP DE GRAS: a table that matches THIS! This is my very most favorite table I own and one of my favorite pieces of furniture because of it's history. This table belonged to my father's mother that she bought back in the 50's with food stamps when the country had fallen on hard times. I remember seeing it in her house when I was growing up. When she passed away my father gave it to me and it has been a staple in my home since I've been married. I've always looked for another one exactly like it so I could have a pair, every antique store, garage sale, etc, to no avail. Well, today my garage saleing really paid off!!! At the very last sale on the way home, I stopped and immediately saw a table that looked just like what I thought was like my grandma's table. I couldn't believe it. I asked the lady what she was asking for it- I ran to my car to grab my wallet because I didn't know if I had any money left. She was asking $5 but I only had $3 and get this- she took it! I could NOT believe it. I snatched up that thing so fast! I didn't even tell her what a find this was or how she was getting rid of a great antique table!
So the garage sale one has chipping paint all over it and I am going to strip it and re-stain it to match my original. I am SO excited!!! I never thought I would have a PAIR of favorite tables!!! This is the stuff shopper-hunters like me dream of!
