Burlap and Felt Thanksgiving Silhouette Banner (No Cost!)

This banner was inspired by three Thanksgiving decor items that I LOVED and I put them all into one.

This pennant, these silhouettes, and a banner very similar to this one that my mom made when I was little.

This project cost me no money as I used what I had on hand (woot!)

Gather your supplies: Burlap, felt, silhouettes, hot glue, scissors, pencil, sharpie, ribbon, dowel.

I started by cutting the burlap into about a 8" strip and making sure it would hang straight. Then I took my {pilgrim boy silhouette} and traced it twice onto paper, then erasing and drawing to create a pilgrim girl and an Native American boy. Then I drew the turkey in the correct size. Looking at the pennant and silhouettes I mentioned above helped.

Using a silver sharpie, I traced the silhouettes onto the black felt. To cut, I used small sharp Fiskars make sure I got crisp details.

I spaced them out on the burlap to decide where I wanted them to go and then hot glued them down. I had to put paper underneath the burlap because the glue would squish through and then I just tore the paper off the back gently. You can't see where the paper stuck.

I pulled two lines of strings from either side of the burlap for my finished edge. I glued ribbon to the top back edges for hanging and then glued a dowel that I cut to size. The dowel keeps the banner from folding in half from the weight. (You can see cardboard under the towel which I tried first but it wasnt strong enough).

Then, hang it up and enjoy!

I LOVE how it turned out!
Have a great weekend, it's starting to get really cold here but no snow yet!

The Friday Four Roundup #14

I'm glad it's almost the weekend and that the election is over! Now I can decorate for Thanksgiving and look forward to one of my favorite holidays!

Here are a few of my favorite pins this week:

1: Such a cute idea for a friend gift or even teacher appreciation {source}.

2. I came across this {Christmas home featured in Midwest Living Magazine} I fell in love with and then spent more time than I care to admit checking out the rest of her blog and her beautiful home. I just love this view of her living room and those pillows {source}.

3. I am hoping to get to {this project} soon, I am thinking of using red fabric ribbon to make some pretty Christmas bows this year. I really need to up my game when it comes to wrapping presents, by the time I get to it I am too tired to make them look pretty. I want to change that this year.

4. And a lovely little quote that is a fabulous reminder to count my blessings :)

DIY Peacock Costume

This year for Halloween, my daughter requested a Peacock costume. I searched the internet and studied several I found on pinterest then went to work with 50 peacock feathers I bought from China on ebay for cheap and what materials I had on hand. Oh- and a big thank you to Grandma for providing the turquoise thermals from Target :)

Supplies: cardboard/box, felt, scissors, pen/sharpie, hot glue, feathers, ribbon, round templates (I used a bowl and a block), pajamas/thermals.

I made a bib necklace out of a green felt triangle using a small bowl for the collar shape and the round block for scallops tracing with a sharpie. The scallops are where the eye of the feather goes, I cut them from the rest of the feather stem and hot glued them into place. Then I did two more layers of felt in blue and purple underneath.

I cut a triangle from the cardboard and used a cup for a template for the scallop shape across the top. I laid out all the feathers from largest to smallest. I put the largest in the middle and each one slightly smaller moving out toward the sides, hot glueing in place. I did this on both sides. I made slits where the ribbon will go through to tie around her waist.

I glued green felt on both sides over the feathers and blue and purple felt scallops on top of that. I made a barrett layering green, blue, and purple felt in the shape of the eye. I used extra feather fluff from the ones I cut for the necklace and glued them around the edges of the felt. For the skirt I glued the tip of the feather stems on a strip of green felt then glued another strip on top of those. Then I glued it to a ribbon long enough to tie around her waist. The ribbon goes around her waist, then through the slits in the tail and then tied into a bow in the back. The necklace will either be tied around her neck with a ribbon glued to it or I will stitch it on the ends to the shirt. Her hair is going to be up and I am going to attempt some fancy makeup.

She's happy, I'm happy!

DIY Wood NOEL Letters with Berry Wreath {Quick, No Cost Project}

Last week while I was checking out some Christmas home tours through blogland, I came across these cute NOEL letters and I thought "hey I could do that with some old ones I have!" So this was my inspiration which you can see by going HERE:

DIY "Noel" display from The Chronicles of Home

Now my letters are small but it was fun to make them "new" again.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I used dark and light burlap and scrapbook paper, white paint, elmers glue and the berry stem all things I had on hand so I spent zero money (woot!)

Have a great week!

Burlap Frames and Thanksgiving Art.

This project was inspired by a picture I saw on Craft Warehouse Blog:

Barnwood Trio Project

I LOVE these barnyard frames, the burlap, and the clips which make it easy to switch things in and out. Very rustic chic looking, don't you think?

I also considered covering my mats in burlap like these ones from Pottery Barn:

Multi-Mat Frames

But ultimately the ease of switching out pictures without having to open the frame every time and risk wearing out the tabs in the back won out. I like to change this certain frame with the months and seasons so this just made sense.

For this project I wanted to use only things that I already had. I've had these little clips since I was a kid, it's a miracle they're still around! But super fun being able to use them. I spray painted two black.

Then I just hot glued burlap to the cardboard that came with the frames. I originally had wanted to use the darker color burlap but I was just about an inch too short (bummer!) So I used this lighter color but I ended up loving it and I think it might work better for all year long - the other color looks very "fallish" to me. If you do this, make sure you pull the burlap very tight before gluing so there's no waves and it also takes care of folds/wrinkles.

Then I just placed them in the frames, measured and hot glued the clips and that's it!
I got this print and sillhouette last year on clearance from here and here. The be thankful print is no longer available but she has some other cute ones like this:

I love how they turned out.

Hope you are enjoying this season of Giving Thanks!!!

Happy Valetine's Day 2013 and technical difficulties

Hello, everyone and happy LOVE day! Yes, I know it's been awhile. My awesome computer that I download all my photos on has been confiscated by the husband for his work. When someone downloaded some business programs for some reason my photo app got deleted. Now I can't download my photos and I'm too mad to pay $15 to get the app again that came free with the computer. Then, my iphone has decided that it will not allow me to send emails from my phone so posting that way is not an option like in the past and no one can figure that one out. SO, for today, we'll have to settle for some good ol' fashioned cuttin and pastin here for some pretty Valentine's eye candy.

These are my favorite Valentine's pins. Please click on the link for my Pinterest account to see the original source of these pins on my Holiday board.

You could easily make these Valentine bookmarks with her template and some scrap fabric or paper for no cost.
